Situations Vacant

 POSITION: VETERINARY SURGEON

The Place

Exeter has been voted one of the 20 best places to live in the country by the Sunday Times. It is a small yet vibrant and growing city with Dartmoor, Exmoor and the gorgeous Devon coast on its doorstep. It is sometimes labelled “the gateway to the west” with Cornwall only 1-2 hours drive, but also the attractions of Dorset and Somerset to the east. It has excellent road and rail links (London Paddington in 2 hours), first class schools, low unemployment and a very low crime rate. Exeter is a major growth point, especially for technology at the new Science Park and major recent relocations include the Meteorological Office, whilst Exeter University has a rapidly growing reputation in a wide range of fields and contributes significantly to the prosperity of the area.

The Practice

Beaumont Veterinary Centre is a long established practice, an accredited Small Animal Practice with the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme and a Vet Nurse Training centre. We are proud to be part of the IVC family

The team currently consists of 3 veterinary surgeons, 5 qualified RVNs, one ANA trainee, 2 receptionists and a practice manager. As a team we are passionate about continual improvement and hold regular meetings so that all the team are included in taking the practice forward. We are currently working towards PSS Awards in Client Service, Diagnostics and Team/Professional Responsibilities. We value first opinion practice as a specialism in its own right and you will be joining vets who already hold further qualifications (Cert AVP(Vet GP) and GPCert SAM) and we would actively encourage and support a new team member in achieving similar (if you already have such, even better!).

We have 15 minute consultations and would expect you to take time to examine patients and communicate effectively with clients with a view to building long term relationships. If you are a vet who thrives on high pressure, rapid throughput of patients this is unlikely to be the position for you!

We have a wide range of diagnostic and surgical equipment including:

  • Digital X ray

  • Digital Dental X ray and dental station

  • Ultrasound (multi probe)

  • Flexible and rigid endoscopes (see also below)

  • Diode laser for surgical and therapeutic use

  • Diathermy unit

  • Fully equipped Idexx Lab (Catalyst/ Lasercyte)

  • Orthopaedic equipment (AO/ASIF fixation and Ridgestop)

  • Tonometer

  • Laser and TENS

We carry out a wide range of surgeries including soft tissue, ophthalmic,

orthopaedic and endoscopic procedures. We were the first practice in Devon

to offer laparoscopic neutering.

Our nursing team are trained in consultation skills and Schedule 3 procedures

and carry out a wide range of nurse consultations including senior and weight

clinics, behavioural advice, physiotherapy treatments, health checks for our

preventative health scheme, post-op and dental checks and puppy parties.

The practice organises client meetings regularly and recent events include an open evening for local schools, a first aid course for clients and evening meetings on feline behaviour and osteoarthritis.

The Position

Ideally we are looking for a veterinary surgeon with some experience though an enthusiastic recent graduate would be offered full support. We offer:

  • a 4-day working week with weekends shared on an equal 1:3 rota (we are planning to extend this to 1:4). We work with an out-of-hours provider within the city but provide our own care for in-patients on rota with full VN back up.

  •  25 days holiday plus statutory bank holidays and your birthday (with a day off in lieu of bank holidays worked).

  • Up to 5 days paid CPD up to £1,500 though these are negotiable with regard to the benefit to the individual and practice – as described above we are happy to support post graduate certificates. IVC provide lots of subsidised CPD both in-house and with external providers.

  • Travel expenses on practice business.

  • RCVS, BVA and VDS membership paid.

  • Salary package commensurate with experience (broadly in the range of £30,000 to £50,000).

  • IVC Benefits package – subsidised gym membership and lots of retail offers.
